An American Story

Saturday I picked up the book The Lyncher In Me -A Search for Redemption in the Face of History by Warren Read.

"A man's search for his family's history turns up a vengeful ancestor..."

According to the AP review, “The Lyncher in Me, an unflinching memoir that traces Read's family dysfunction back through the generations to the night of the 1920 Duluth, Minnesota lynchings of three black young men. Warren Read's great grandfather was the leader of the lynch mob.)

The reviewer also noted, “The Lyncher in Me has enough fascinating history and raw emotion to be sufficient on its face. The story might have been better served had Read condensed the aftermath into tighter, more meaningful prose.”

“In his poignant memoir, Read explores the perspectives of both the victims and the perpetrators of this heinous crime. He investigates the impact–the denial, anger, and alcoholism–that the long-held secret of his ancestors had on his family, calling even himself to task. Through this examination of the generations affected by one horrific night, he discovers that to fully realize ourselves we must take responsibility for ‘our deep-seated fears that lead us to emotional, social, or physical violence,’” according to the book description.

Side Note: Without searching in depth I've discovered more than I ever wanted to know about the leaves which fell from my family tree.

I posted the above at another site and a friend asked me did I think that we are all capable of monstrosities under the right set of circumstances. And that he struggles with this one.

My Response..."Yes I do believe this because history has recorded the atrocities which humanity has committed against humanity. But history has also recorded that which brings out the best in us. I too have struggled with this and from my life experiences I've attained an understanding of (not acceptance) what a human being will do to prove that what they've been taught to believe is worth dying for, worth killing for. If I ever found myself in a such a situation under the right set of circumstances I hope that I would have it in me to remain true to my core values."

Symbol Of Peace

Anthem

The birds they sang
at the break of day
Start again
I heard them say
Don't dwell on what
has passed away
or what is yet to be.
Ah the wars they will
be fought again
The holy dove
She will be caught again
bought and sold
and bought again
the dove is never free.

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in.

We asked for signs
the signs were sent:
the birth betrayed
the marriage spent
Yeah the widowhood
of every government --
signs for all to see.

I can't run no more
with that lawless crowd
while the killers in high places
say their prayers out loud.
But they've summoned, they've summoned up
a thundercloud
and they're going to hear from me.

Ring the bells that still can ring ...

You can add up the parts
but you won't have the sum
You can strike up the march,
there is no drum
Every heart, every heart
to love will come
but like a refugee.

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in.

Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything
That's how the light gets in.
That's how the light gets in.
That's how the light gets in.

Happy 50th birthday to a concept which can only live in our hearts.

"Five years 'seems' like a long time..." 4,000 dead American soldiers is an immense and heartbreaking toll to pay for... what, who and why???

Primary colors

[The Re-education of Geraldine Ferraro]

And I say that Hilary Clinton's in the position she's in because she's a (wealthy) white woman.

Enough with using the race card! Enough with you hypocritical democrats. For years you have caused an immense amount of damage to the democratic party.

Geraldine Ferraro it's time for you and your 'friends' to move on, step aside and let the people (us) vote. We don't need or want your opinions which seem to come from racism. You all tried to hide this little secret but it's now out in the open.

The truth... There are democrats (many) who are clearly racist.

Well, I've been waiting, I was sure we'd meet
between the trains we're waiting for, I think
it's time to board another.

Please understand I never had a secret chart to
get me to the heart of this or any other matter.
